Plumblink partnership renovates 640 toilets in Diepsloot

In a meaningful collaboration between Plumblink and Wassup, supported by the WOT-IF? Trust, 640 street toilets and taps were fixed in the Diepsloot Extension 1 community. Diepsloot, situated between Johannesburg and Tshwane, was established in 1994 as a post-apartheid township. Extension 1 is its least developed area needing the most improvement. The toilets fixed serve a community of about 25 000 homes, with around 39 households sharing each toilet. This project goes some way to addressing the critical need for improved hygiene and health standards in the community, and champions the power of partnerships to effect change.

The Plumblink operations are situated near Diepsloot, presenting an excellent chance for the company to make a positive impact to its nearby community. The project started four years ago, with Plumblink, a specialist plumbing merchant, providing all the materials needed to renovate and improve the toilet facilities.

WOT-IF? Trust, established in 2013, provides enabling resources that drive economic activity in Diepsloot. With a hyper-localised focus on Diepsloot, the organisation implements various programmes and projects and develops partnerships to foster growth in the community. The trust concentrates its efforts on the intersection of greening and technology, targeting five distinct groups — early childhood development practitioners, children aged 8 to 17 years, young adults aged 18 to 35, microenterprises, and the community at large. With assistance from Plumblink, WOT-IF? Trust has successfully served four out of the five identified target groups.

Wassup is a non-governmental organisation, led by local Diepsloot residents, which repairs toilets, drains and taps in the community, and is an integral part of WOT-IF? Trust’s ecosystem. The trust allocates a portion of its funding from Plumblink to support some of Wassup's projects. Through this collaboration, Wassup uses the allocated funds to fix, upgrade and maintain the 640 toilets in the area.
